It was founded in 1531 as “Ciudad de los Angeles”, and was a bastion for Spaniards between Mexico City and the port of Veracruz. Later, the name was changed to “Puebla de los Angeles”. The Battle of Puebla, in which the mexican army defeated French invaders, the most powerful army in the world at that time, took place in 1862 at the Forts of Loreto and Guadalupe, two current attractions for tourists. The victory is celebrated annually in the country and abroad as the 5 de mayo holiday. General Ignacio Zaragoza was the man in command of the mexican army during that battle and the city was re-named “Puebla de Zaragoza” in his honor.
